Best route to become a Physician Assistant?
I am 25 a mother of 2 children I have a very supportive boyfriend and a great mother in law who helps me with my children. Currently I am attending school because I was laid off and well I decided to go back to school. In the process of obtaining my certificate as a "Patient Account Specialist" I have realized that I really like the material, learning about the body and the health world so I decided I want to go in to the Health field and become a PA.
I have been doing research and I am aware that to become a PA you need to have a bachelors in something, take the pre-reqs, certain amount of patient care experience (the PA program near me takes 4000 hours min).
I am currently in the situation where I don’t know what route to take to become a PA. Here are 3 of the routes I am thinking about.
Route 1. The certification I am about to obtain gives me the opportunity to continue for another year and become a Medical Assistant (which would be perfect to help me obtain the patient care experience). Once I receive the AAS, the community college I attend has a affiliation with a 4 year college that is on campus. If I take some more courses plus the AAS in Medical Assisting the I can transfer to the 4 year college to obtain a Bachelors in Business Admin. Once I am done with that I will be able to work on my pre-reqs and hopefully have enough hours to apply for PA school.
Here is the other route available to me.
Route 2
Obtain a bachelors in Nursing. That way when I am done with my BSN I can work while i take the pre-reqs for the PA program.
I know that if I obtain a BSN i can use that and become a NP, but in honesty I dont want to. I really like orthopedics and would like to become an orthopedics PA, surgery or go in to a family practice.
I realized that I like the medical model over the nursing model (I understand that while the two models are describes differently online in actual practice they could be different. so who knows my approach could change)
Route 3.
Get a bachelors in something (biology maybe nutrition……) work as a CNA part time, complete the pre-reqs and then go from there.
What seems to be the better route, especially when it comes to the goal of getting accepted in to the PA program?
I know I have a ways to go but currently I am getting funding from a source and if I want to apply to the MA program I have to do it ASAP for purposes of my funding.
I thank you in advance for taking the time to read my sittuation and for giving me sound advice 🙂
